The Downey Family

Hello, We are Downey Danes, owned and operated by Lisa Downey & Charles Downey in Virginia. We strive to breed our Danes to the AKC CKC standard. We currently are retired from our breeding program. Because our danes are a part of our family, the parents and every puppy that leaves our home, we continue to run the website for us and our extended family so we can watch our babies grow and they can watch their siblings grow as well. We are not a kennel that places their dogs outside in a pen or kennel and breeds them till no return. Also we keep our Retired moms and dads and don't find homes for them once they don't breed anymore. They are our family and we do not place our retired adults. But if you are interested in an adult dane, Many dane rescues are looking to place danes in need. You can find a dane rescue in just about any area you live. Our Adults and every puppy that left our home was raised underfoot, with children and with great care. It's more work to keep 5-14 puppies in your house rather than outside, but we love it. I just can't keep them outside in a pen. Won't do it to the adults or the babies. They have their own beds and sleep in the comfort that you would want to be in. These danes are our babies, and I wouldn't put my baby in a pen in the dirt. We loved Breeding and raising our danes and may consider restarting our breeding program in 10-15 years. Until then, We will do our best to help new dane owners and our dane owners give their danes the best care possible. Before making the leap that a dane is for you. Do your research. I have added some links that may help you in the link section of this site feel free to browse them. A dane is not a dog that can sit outside on a chain with no interaction. They are house pets. Yes, they are big, but so is their heart. And they need the love and support from humans.
Yes, A dane eats alot, and their care is expensive. Research your foods, make sure it is targeted for them. They can't eat your average off the shelf "no name" dog food. Their spay or neuter will be higher due to weight. There are so many things to consider. But I would love to go into detail with you about any questions that you have.
We, here at Downey Danes, do not crop our danes ears. Which is the typical standard you mostly see. But the Natural ear is really dominating the scene more and more even in the show ring you are seeing more and more. It is a personal preference. I am not against you having a puppy purchased from us done, we just chose not to. As long as you do your research and have a qualified DVM do it.
We also have other animals in our family. We have one boxer named Brewzer aka Brew-Brew. A Shih-tzu named Maya (she thinks she is the boss of the house and pretty much is the alpha dog). A Calico Cat named Tiger & A Tabby named Tiny As you can see we love animals. And although all our animals are spayed and neutered they fill our house with joy. All of our Kittens were strays that needed a home And our 5 Danes Nina Sweetheart Lady (Blue-Retired) Marty's Lucky Chance (Blue-Retired) Wild Spirit of RavenClaw (black-Retired) Marty's Mighty Mouse (Blue-Never bred) and Popcorn (Black-never bred Nuetered).
The Family consist of Me, Lisa, my husband Charlie, and my two beautiful Children Hunter ( 12 ) and Kirsten ( 9 )and Van (Our new addition).
So have fun, search the site, and if you have any question please contact us. You may email or call.
